How to Take Care of Your Colorado Lawn

Homeowners have a lot to worry about when it comes to Colorado lawn care. From knowing when to power rake to providing ample hydration for your lawn and plants, digging into these landscaping tasks can be intense and overwhelming.

Before you get started on your landscaping, take time to familiarize yourself with the common ways to care for your Colorado lawn. With these simple tips, your lawn will transform into an oasis of tranquility ready for entertaining.

Aerating

Aeration is a process that allows soil to breathe and develop stronger roots by perforating the lawn with small holes. Doing so allows needed air and water flow into the grass roots, making them more nutrient dense. If this process isn’t done regularly as part of your Colorado lawn care routine, you may notice damage to your lawn and excess of thatch buildup. Aerating isn’t always an easy task, so be sure to contact your local lawn care services for assistance.

Power raking

If your lawn does suffer from a buildup of thatch, it could benefit from power raking. This lawn care process is perfect for Colorado lawns since thatch buildup is common after winter months. In fact, power raking is best done during transition months like spring or fall, since the grass is dormant during this time. Shallow raking can be done in spring to remove dead thatch, but be wary about overdoing it. It’s best to contact a professional lawn service technician for thatch removal projects since it can be harmful to lawns if done incorrectly.

Watering

A vibrant Colorado lawn requires specific watering techniques. To produce that lush look you’re going for, try watering deeply yet infrequently. This method is known to bring out the best in the Colorado lawn. Have your lawn care specialist assist you in assessing your sprinkler system output to figure out how much water your lawn needs during watering cycles.

Mowing

Did you know that mowing incorrectly can actually harm your lawn? Mowing with a dull blade can dry out your lawn when it tears the grass out instead of cutting it. Be sure to sharpen your mowing blades frequently to ensure a thorough mowing technique, especially for bluegrass lawns. Cut this grass type at a height of 2.5 inches every spring and allow it to grow between a height of 3 to 3.5 inches in warmer weather.

Seeding

There are several ways that seeding can help your Colorado lawn flourish. For starters, seeding can help cover any dead or dry spots caused by pets, watering issues, and more. For dead patches, simply pull out the turf and cover with fresh soil and seed. Seeding can also assist in thin lawns that need a makeover. A process called overseeding involves aeration or power raking to expose the soil and saturate the exposed soil with new seed. Keep this area moist and clear of weeds or foot traffic while the new grass is growing to ensure a plush and vibrant new lawn.
