Like all pipes, sometimes damage can occur that calls for the pipe to be repaired or replaced. We’ll take a look at how to fix these pipes, and give insight as to when they need to be replaced.

Anything from poor installation to freezing temperatures can cause damage to pipes. They’ll generally start with smaller leaks that will become worse if not addressed promptly. Things like fluctuating water pressure, mold problems, or puddles underneath the sink can be a sign that something is amiss. Also, if there is a large change in your water bill, that could be an indication that everything isn’t working properly.
These issues can usually be repaired using fiberglass resin tape, silicone repair tape, or an epoxy to slow down the damage. By applying the either of those kinds of tape to the spot of the minor leak, it can often provide a solution for the problem. Applying epoxy to the damaged area can protect it from getting worse by keeping water away from the damaged area. However, many of these might be temporary fixes, depending on the damage to the pipe, and meaning your situation could be a candidate for replacement.

One great benefit of PVC pipes is they are easily manipulated so that you often can replace the section of pipe is damaged – connecting the remaining pieces with the new piece through couplings and solvent cement.
To do this, cut the pipe at least 1½ inches on either side of the damaged area. Once the pipe is dry and the damaged part has been removed, fit the replacement section into the pipe, making sure it’s properly secured around the remaining PVC. Apply the solvent cement inside the fittings of the replacement pipe, as well as the outside of the existing pipe. Put the existing pipe in the replacement fittings, and twist to secure the glue inside. Hold the pipe for 20-30 seconds to make sure a strong bond is formed.
There are a number of ways pipes can get damaged or need replacement. Making sure this is done properly is important in preventing future leaks.
