Are There Rules for Denver Sprinkler Systems?

Denver Sprinkler Rules

Colorado often experiences arid weather conditions that cause drought and dry soil. Because of this, water reservoirs need more time to collect runoff from the spring rains. These drought-like conditions have a major impact on water usage and Denver sprinkler systems for locals.

Watering rules and guidelines for Denver sprinkler systems have been put in place to help reduce water waste and preserve reservoirs. Following these rules helps you and your water bill, as well as the land and wildlife. Find out more about Denver sprinkler watering guidelines and permits below.

Denver Sprinkler Watering Rules

Summer drought is common in Colorado. Much of the local water supply stems from the previous year’s snow runoff that collects in the upper Colorado River Basin. Due to climate change and dry weather, however, this source is dwindling.

Following general watering guidelines can help reserve water while keeping your yard looking its best. Denver Water suggests the following for lawn care and best watering practices:

  • Avoid wasting water by ensuring your sprinkler only waters lawns and plants instead of sidewalks and driveways.
  • Keep water from pooling in certain areas like gutters and streets.
  • Shut off your sprinkler system during storms and rainy days.
  • Keep sprinkler systems in good working condition and repair leaking systems within 10 days.

Best Watering Times

You can also help to conserve water by sticking to certain watering times and avoiding overwatering. The best watering times are typically during the coolest parts of the day. Set your sprinkler timer to water only during early morning or late evening to conserve water usage. Avoid the hottest parts of the day – between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Additionally, limit watering to only a few times per week. Many plants and trees do not require everyday watering, especially those located in shady areas. In fact, landscaped areas require half as much watering as lawns do. Decrease watering to one day per week during the rainiest season.

Denver Sprinkler Permits

There are a few permits and regulations involved if you’re looking to install a new sprinkler system for your Denver yard. You can choose to install this system yourself or get the help of a licensed contractor.

If you choose to install your own sprinkler system, the Denver Building Code and Building Department Policy requires the following:

  • A homeowners exam
  • A review of your yard by Denver Forestry
  • A plumbing permit

Additionally, regulations and inspections from the Denver Building Code and Denver Forestry are needed. This ensures that all structures and buildings on your property are up to code prior to sprinkler installation. It’s important that sprinkler systems don’t harm tree roots, as well. Denver Forestry can also help to remove or trim trees safely if needed.

The easiest way to install a new sprinkler system is with the help of a licensed Denver Sprinkler professional. They can help you install new sprinkler irrigation safely and with the correct permits. With the help of a sprinkler technician, you can do your part in following watering and sprinkler rules, as well.
